To be continued...

We all conjure up the same images of the Irish. A merry, singing and dancing kind of lot who are always “up for the craic” as long as their mate Guinness is about.  But what do you really know about Dublin’s nightlife outside of Temple Bar? Surely the locals have their own music haven away from all the gimmicky folk instrumentals that keep the yanks so easily entertained. Sounding cynical? Maybe. I’ve operated five flights now to Dubs and I’m no closer to finding the answer. That’s not to say I’m writing the city off as one trick tourist sucking pony either…

I painfully missed Jack Beats last week by one day and so it seems I’ve just been on the unlucky side with my flying dates in catching the right club nights to go to. The one venue I did make it down to (midweek may I add) was unfortunately suffering from the aftermath of Freshers Fortnght in lacking the vibe i.e. people. However a quick chat outside with the manager gave me a glimpse into what it can really play host to on the right night. His cheeky wink with talk of the odd lock in or two and I can just imagine how crazy this place can get on the weekend. Named ‘The Twisted Pepper’ (how very apt!) on Middle Abbey Street – is a five minute walk down some of the darker more rough and ready streets away from Temple Bar.

No firejuggler, busker or pupeteer in sight, absolute bliss! It reminded me a lot of Monkey Bar Swansea in terms of the random mix of happenings on offer. By day it plays hippy cafĂ©/bookshop where you can find crafts, exhibitions, workshops, talks and even a multi-media production suite. However it’s the DJ names it attracts that make it a stand out venue in bringing DnB, Grime, Roots Reggae, Electro and Hip Hop to the surprisingly restricted capital. Friday nights are hosted by bassheads ‘MUD’… and my kind of night in advertising Randall, DJ Marky, Fabio, Hatcha, Hyperdub, DJ Yoda and Skream on their lead up to Christmas.  It’s just down to rostering now and sweet talking crew control in giving me a MUD night to enjoy and take this blog further.
